On November 1 Byron reached Boston, hoping to engage d’Estaing. The very next day, however, another nor’easter struck, scattering Byron’s fleet again. Foul-Weather Jack just could not escape the dark cloud that seemed to hover over him. The ferocious storm blew for two days. When it subsided, d’Estaing took advantage of the opening and escaped from Boston before Byron could return, shaping a course for the West Indies. His battered fleet had been rapidly repaired. Since he was paying in hard money, work on his ships took priority—even over those of the Continental navy.
